directAnswer: "CRC Tapco may fit when an account falls within one of its currently eligible property, general-liability or personal-lines classes and you want its underwriter-led quote-and-bind route. Nomos may fit when the submission needs brokerage judgment before the right E&S or specialty direction is clear. CRC Tapco identifies as an E&S MGA and wholesale broker with binding authority, but its FAQ says the authority stays with its underwriter—not the retail broker. Confirm the class, state, insurer, authority and transaction lane before choosing either route."
nomosFit:
  - "The account needs interpretation before the most credible E&S or specialty direction is clear."
  - "You want to send the available file for direct review and identify missing information from there."
  - "More than a class selection is needed to explain the operations, loss history or requested coverage."
  - "Nomos can confirm current fit and a credible next step before any market is released."
alternativeFit:
  - "The risk matches a currently eligible CRC Tapco property, general-liability or personal-lines class."
  - "You want to work directly with a CRC Tapco underwriter through its published phone or online quote route."
  - "A defined binding-authority product is more relevant than an open-ended market search."
  - "You have confirmed the state, producer-license, insurer, application and binding requirements for the account."

nomos: "A wholesale brokerage that reviews the retail agent's submission and helps identify a credible E&S or specialty placement direction."

  - label: "Account shape"

alternative: "A risk that fits CRC Tapco's current class, state, carrier and underwriting rules for a defined product lane."
  - label: "Starting point"
nomos: "Starts with the file the agent already has, then identifies what is missing and whether current appetite supports a next step."
alternative: "Starts by matching the risk to a published coverage or class, then working with a CRC Tapco underwriter by phone or online."
  - label: "Underwriting path"
nomos: "Broker review and insurer underwriting are separate steps; an appetite assessment is not a carrier quote."
alternative: "A CRC Tapco underwriter evaluates the account within the applicable binding-authority lane and controls whether coverage can be bound."
  - label: "Binding authority"
nomos: "Nomos does not claim universal binding authority. Confirm who holds authority for the insurer, product and account."
alternative: "CRC Tapco publishes binding authority, but its FAQ says the retail broker receives none; coverage must be bound by a CRC Tapco underwriter."
  - label: "Market scope"
nomos: "Can consider a brokerage direction beyond a single published MGA product, but access and appetite still require account-specific confirmation."
alternative: "Works within CRC Tapco's published product and carrier lanes; a category listing does not establish eligibility or terms for one account."
  - label: "Producer relationship"
nomos: "Operates as a wholesale brokerage for retail agents; confirm any onboarding and state-specific requirements before release."
alternative: "Says placements are brokerage transactions rather than insurer appointments, while directing brokers to confirm state licensing requirements."

  - "What information must be complete before Nomos or CRC Tapco can evaluate the account?"
  - "Is the current response only a receipt, appetite indication, quote, binder or issued policy?"
  - "Who handles surplus-lines filings, payment, endorsements, claims routing, servicing and renewal?"

faq:
  - question: "Is CRC Tapco the same as CRC Specialty Brokerage?"
answer: "No. CRC Tapco is the rebranded Tapco Underwriters business and is publicly identified as an E&S MGA and wholesale broker with binding authority. CRC Specialty Brokerage is a separate CRC operating lane. Confirm which team and transaction actually apply to the account."
  - question: "Does a retail broker receive binding authority from CRC Tapco?"
answer: "No. CRC Tapco's FAQ says retail brokers do not receive binding authority and that all coverage must be bound by a CRC Tapco underwriter. A quote or class listing is therefore not permission for the retail broker to bind coverage."
  - question: "When may CRC Tapco fit?"
answer: "When the account matches a currently eligible CRC Tapco class and the direct underwriter-led product route is preferable to a broader placement analysis. Verify the state, insurer, underwriting rules, application and binding conditions before relying on that route."
  - question: "When might Nomos be the more relevant route?"
answer: "When the account needs brokerage interpretation before the right E&S or specialty direction is clear, or when the available file needs clarification and market strategy first. Nomos still must confirm live appetite and a credible route for the specific account."

## CRC Tapco is a distinct CRC operating lane

CRC Group [announced in February 2026](https://www.crcgroup.com/About-Us/Latest-News/crc-group-announces-rebrand-of-tapco-underwriters-inc-to-crc-tapco) that Tapco Underwriters Inc. had become CRC Tapco, identifying the business as an E&S MGA. CRC Tapco's own [homepage](https://www.crctapco.com/) calls it a wholesale broker with binding authority and publishes personal- and commercial-lines product categories.

That combination needs a precise reading. CRC Tapco's [FAQ](https://www.crctapco.com/About/FAQs) says its dealings with retail brokers are brokerage transactions rather than insurer appointments. The same FAQ says binding authority remains with CRC Tapco's underwriter and is not delegated to the retail broker. CRC Tapco is therefore not interchangeable with CRC Specialty Brokerage, CRC Select or CRC Group's other underwriting businesses simply because they share a parent brand.

For a plain-language explanation of these roles, start with [wholesale broker vs. MGA vs. retail broker](/resources/wholesale-broker-vs-mga-vs-retail-broker/).

## A defined Tapco class can make the decision shorter

CRC Tapco publishes property, general-liability and personal-lines categories and describes a phone-led process alongside an online quote route. When the risk fits a current class, state and underwriting rule, going directly to that defined MGA lane may be more useful than asking a wholesale broker to begin with a broader placement analysis.

The category alone is not the underwriting result. CRC Tapco's public pages do not establish eligibility, carrier capacity, quote terms or binding for a particular account. Confirm the specific insurer, required application, limits, exclusions and who can take each transaction step. CRC Tapco also tells retail brokers to verify the licensing their state requires.

## Nomos fits when the route still needs interpretation

Nomos [describes a wholesale process](https://nomos-insurance.com/) that starts with the submission the retail agent already has. One person reviews the file directly, tests current fit and identifies missing information. That can be useful when operations, loss history or the requested coverage need explanation before the right E&S or specialty direction is apparent.

This does not make Nomos the automatic destination for a risk outside CRC Tapco's appetite. Nomos must still confirm its own current fit, the proposed placement direction and any market-release plan. Neither route guarantees carrier interest, a quote or coverage.

## Keep authority and status explicit

Ask both firms to label each stage accurately: receipt, broker review, underwriting review, quote, binder and issuance are not synonyms. With CRC Tapco, confirm that its underwriter has authority for the exact carrier and product. With Nomos, confirm which insurer or authorized party would quote and bind if the account advances.

The same discipline applies after binding. CRC Tapco publishes procedures for applications, billing and claims, while a Nomos placement may allocate those duties differently depending on the insurer and transaction. Before choosing, identify who owns surplus-lines administration, payment, endorsements, claims routing, servicing and renewal—not merely who first received the submission.
