directAnswer: "Start by identifying which USG route would actually handle the account. USG publicly describes itself as both a national wholesale broker and an MGA, with Commercial Lines, USG Specialty, a Brokerage Division, National Programs and the INS LINK portal. USG may fit when a named broker, specialty unit, defined program or supported portal workflow lines up with the risk. Nomos may fit when you want one person to review the account directly, match it against current appetite and help shape the submission. An existing productive USG relationship can outweigh a general operating-model preference. Neither website proves live appetite, access, authority or terms for your file."
nomosFit:
  - "You want one person to review the account directly and tell you what the submission needs next."
  - "The file needs appetite review and preparation before an underwriter sees it."
  - "You prefer a focused wholesale relationship over choosing among several product and operating lanes."
  - "Nomos can confirm a credible route inside its current appetite and scope."
alternativeFit:
  - "The account maps to a specific USG broker, specialty unit or published National Program."
  - "A Brokerage Division specialist can show relevant experience in property, casualty, builder's risk or professional liability."
  - "The applicable product has a useful workflow in USG's INS LINK portal."
  - "You already have a productive relationship with a USG producer or broker who understands comparable accounts."
dimensions:
  - label: "Choosing the operating lane"
nomos: "A focused wholesale workflow: send the account for direct appetite review, then confirm the available route and next requirements."
alternative: "USG presents Commercial Lines, USG Specialty, a Brokerage Division, National Programs and a portal. Identify the actual lane before comparing service or authority."
  - label: "Wholesale brokerage"
nomos: "Reviews the account against current appetite and helps prepare the file for an appropriate underwriting conversation."
alternative: "Its Brokerage Division publishes Builder's Risk, Casualty & Excess, Commercial Property and Professional Liability as focus areas."
  - label: "Complex-account support"
nomos: "Fit depends on the placement strategy Nomos can actually explain for the account; no layered capacity is promised here."
alternative: "The Brokerage Division publicly describes layered and quota-share property work plus casualty-form and professional-liability expertise. Confirm which specialist would contribute to this file."
  - label: "MGA and program routes"
nomos: "This comparison concerns Nomos's wholesale placement work. Any underwriting authority remains specific to the insurer and transaction."
alternative: "USG also publishes specialty divisions and National Programs. A program's appetite, authority and workflow do not automatically apply to an open-market brokerage submission."
  - label: "Digital workflow"
nomos: "A broker-led submission process, not a public online quote-and-bind platform."
alternative: "USG says INS LINK provides online quoting, pipeline visibility, application downloads and a route to underwriting teams. Confirm that the actual product is supported before relying on that workflow."
  - label: "Finding a specialist"
nomos: "One person reviews the account directly; ask what class experience and underwriting path support the proposed approach."
alternative: "USG publishes offices and specialty contacts, and says agents may work with preferred team members. Find the person with relevant experience before releasing the account."
  - label: "Submission preparation"
nomos: "Starts with the file you have, tests fit and follows up on what's needed for a credible submission."
alternative: "Requirements may differ across brokerage, specialty, program and portal routes. Ask the assigned team what makes the file complete for that exact lane."
  - label: "Status and servicing"
nomos: "Says agents are kept posted, including when the answer is no. That is not a guaranteed response time or quote."
alternative: "INS LINK advertises pipeline visibility. Confirm which status tools, servicing contacts and post-bind responsibilities apply to this product."
questions:
  - "Which exact USG route would receive this account: Brokerage Division, another specialty unit, a National Program, Commercial Lines or INS LINK?"
  - "Who will review the submission, and what relevant experience does that person have with this class?"
  - "Is the account eligible for a named program or portal workflow, and who holds any underwriting authority?"
  - "What must be complete before the account is released to an insurer or underwriting team?"
  - "How will receipt, appetite review, market release, carrier response, quote and bind status be reported separately?"
  - "Which person or team handles policy service and renewal after placement?"

faq:
  - question: "Is USG Insurance Services a wholesale broker or an MGA?"
answer: "USG publicly describes itself as both. It also separates Commercial Lines, USG Specialty, a Brokerage Division and National Programs. Ask which exact route would handle the account instead of assuming one label explains the workflow or authority."
  - question: "Does every USG submission use INS LINK?"
answer: "USG says INS LINK provides online quoting and account-pipeline tools, but its public pages do not establish that every product or submission is supported there. Confirm the applicable product and workflow before relying on the portal."
  - question: "When may USG fit?"
answer: "When the account maps to a named USG broker, relevant specialty unit, defined program or supported portal workflow — especially if an existing USG relationship is already productive."
  - question: "When may Nomos fit?"
answer: "When you want a focused wholesale relationship where one person reviews the account directly, tests it against current appetite and helps prepare the submission. Nomos still has to confirm live fit for the account."

## USG is several placement routes under one name

USG [describes itself](https://www.usgins.com/) as both a national wholesale broker and managing general agent. Its [product directory](https://www.usgins.com/products) then separates Commercial Lines, USG Specialty and National Programs; the site also presents INS LINK as a digital service surface. That makes the first question practical, not promotional: which exact route would receive your account?

The distinction matters because brokerage, delegated-authority programs and online workflows do different work. A program may have defined eligibility and authority. A Brokerage Division file may require open-market strategy. A portal feature may exist for one supported product without applying to everything USG sells. If the proposed team cannot name the lane, you do not yet have enough information to compare it with Nomos.

The [wholesale broker, MGA and retail broker explainer](/resources/wholesale-broker-vs-mga-vs-retail-broker/) is useful here: company labels often overlap, but authority and responsibility still belong to the actual transaction.

## USG's Brokerage Division has a specific published case

USG's [Brokerage Division](https://www.usgins.com/brokerage-division) publishes Builder's Risk, Casualty & Excess, Commercial Property and Professional Liability as focus areas. It also describes experience with layered and quota-share property structures, casualty forms and professional-liability recommendations. That is a credible reason to consider USG when one of those disciplines matters and a relevant specialist is actually available.

USG also [says](https://www.usgins.com/about-us) its Producer/Brokers are not divided by territory, coverage or account size, and that retail agents can work with preferred team members. If you already have a USG broker who understands the class and has performed well on comparable accounts, that relationship deserves real weight. A national organization is useful when it leads to the right person — not merely because the organization is large.

## Programs and portal features should stay in their own lanes

USG publishes National Programs for segments including auto haulers, boat haulers, commercial storage tanks, educational institutions, on-hook operations and religious institutions. A relevant program may fit more directly than open-market brokerage when the account meets its current criteria. But a program listing is not proof of eligibility, state availability, terms or authority for the live risk.

USG also says INS LINK provides online quoting, application downloads and visibility into the account pipeline. Those features may matter when the actual product is supported. They do not turn every USG submission into an online quote-and-bind transaction, and they should not be used to describe Brokerage Division service unless the assigned team confirms that workflow.

## Nomos offers a more focused starting point

Nomos [describes](https://nomos-insurance.com/) a wholesale workflow where one person reviews the account directly, matches it against appetite in-house and follows up on what the submission needs. That may fit when you want to begin with the file you have instead of selecting among several divisions, programs and platforms.

Focus is not proof that Nomos can place the risk, reach a particular insurer or produce a quote. USG may fit more directly when a named specialist, a fitting National Program, or a genuinely supported portal path can do something concrete for the account. Use the [wholesale-partner evaluation guide](/resources/how-to-evaluate-a-wholesale-partner/) to test either firm on live appetite, submission work, market-release control and honest status reporting.

## Make the route concrete before releasing the file

Ask both firms to explain the work they would do on this account. For USG, get the division, product, assigned person and source of authority straight. For Nomos, confirm the appetite path, what is missing and who will make the underwriting decision. Choose the route that can make those details concrete before your submission starts moving through the market.
