A bar renewal can look competitive on premium and headline limits while leaving a material question unanswered: what happens to a claim involving an alleged assault?
For a retail producer, the comparison needs the actual GL and liquor wording. A summary saying “A&B included” is useful only when the documents show what that means.
Review both lines before comparing price
Ask for any assault-and-battery exclusion or endorsement on each policy, the applicable limit and defense terms. A&B treatment can differ between products: a historical USLI liquor product comparison illustrates an excluded version and a version that may offer coverage, with differing expense treatment. This is a published example of form variation, not Nomos’s offered terms.
For the actual quote, build a short record:
| Item | What to identify |
|---|---|
| Exclusion or grant | The exact form and endorsement, on GL and liquor separately |
| Relevant allegations | Whether the wording addresses failure to prevent an assault, security or supervision |
| Limits | Any A&B sublimit and aggregate; how they interact with other limits |
| Defense | Whether expenses reduce available limits and what triggers the defense obligation |
| Insured share | The deductible or retention and the expenses to which it applies |
| Other policies | The treatment under any proposed umbrella or excess wording |
Ask the market to identify the provisions supporting its answer. Keep that answer with the forms for the agency’s comparison.
Read the allegations as well as the incident description
Consider a hypothetical claim in which a patron alleges a fight, overservice and inadequate security. It would be premature to allocate the claim to one policy using only the word “fight.”
The producer’s review should ask how each form treats those allegations. Does a relevant exclusion extend to alleged failures in hiring, training or supervision? Does an endorsement change that result? Flag questions that need a coverage professional’s interpretation instead of assuming that a negligence allegation escapes an exclusion.
Show the tradeoff clearly to the insured
If one offer has an A&B sublimit and another excludes the exposure, put that difference beside the price. If both describe coverage, continue through defense costs and the other conditions. Two matching headline limits are not enough to finish the comparison.
Use the GL/liquor renewal checklist for the broader account, and the standalone-versus-combined guide when the proposals use different arrangements.
For an ordinary bar or tavern renewal, send Nomos the current GL and liquor liability terms and identify the provision you want reviewed. Include state, operations, hours and loss information. That gives your agency a concrete starting point for a competitive comparison without presuming the new offer’s A&B terms.
