Comparing bar and restaurant GL and liquor liability quotes: a retail agent's checklist

A practical renewal checklist for retail agents comparing bar and restaurant GL/liquor pricing, exclusions, defense costs and terms.

A bar or restaurant renewal lands with two numbers: the incumbent’s premium and a competing quote. The producer needs to explain the difference to the client. A lower price is useful, but the comparison becomes incomplete if one offer removes a provision the other includes.

Start with the expiring policy and the proposed forms. A quote summary is the beginning of the review; the endorsements resolve the coverage questions.

Compare the same account and the complete terms

For a useful GL and liquor comparison, line up the insured operations, limits, exclusions, defense provisions and total quoted cost. Then identify what changed. The California Department of Insurance’s commercial guide explains the role of declarations, insuring agreements, exclusions and conditions in reading a policy.

Use one comparison sheet with a column for each offer:

CheckQuestion to resolve
Account factsAre both quotes using the same legal entities, locations, receipts and alcohol-sales split?
GL and liquorWhich coverage parts and endorsements are actually included?
LimitsWhat applies per occurrence, each common cause or claim, as applicable, and in the aggregate or to restricted coverage?
Assault and batteryIs there an exclusion, limited coverage or a separate endorsement on either line?
Defense expensesDo expenses reduce a limit, and does the retention apply to them?
Total costWhat are the premiums, taxes, fees and financing charges, where applicable?
ConditionsWhat information, signatures or other requirements remain outstanding?

Record an unanswered question as unresolved. Leaving an empty cell can make an incomplete offer look equivalent to a fully documented one.

Give the exclusions their own conversation

Defense treatment and assault-and-battery terms can distinguish liquor products. A historical USLI product comparison illustrates those differences within one provider’s published range. It is an example of why forms matter, not a description of Nomos’s current market or an available quote.

Suppose, hypothetically, the less expensive offer excludes A&B while the incumbent includes a stated A&B limit. Present both the price difference and that change to the insured. Ask whether an alternative wording is available before describing the offers as comparable. Our bar A&B guide sets out the questions to put beside the forms.

Send a baseline the next market can use

For an ordinary bar or tavern or restaurant, send current terms with the state, renewal date, operations, receipts, hours and a brief loss summary. Explain the objective: a competitive price comparison, a wording concern, or both.

Nomos can discuss liquor liability and GL options with your agency. Use the submission checklist if the file is still coming together. An initial review may require more underwriting information; available terms depend on the account.

Short answers.

What should an agent send for a GL and liquor renewal comparison?

Send the operation type, risk state, effective date, receipts and alcohol-sales share, closing hours, current premium and limits, and a loss summary. Include current forms and applications if available; underwriting may need more information.

Does a lower liquor quote mean the same coverage for less money?

Only a comparison of the actual terms can establish what changed. Check limits, exclusions, defense expenses, deductibles, fees and outstanding conditions alongside premium.
